How Hard Water in Stanislaus County Shortens Water Heater Life
Central Valley tap water is notoriously mineral-rich. Here’s how that hard water wears out water heaters early and what homeowners can do to extend their unit’s life before winter.

The Central Valley draws much of its municipal water from groundwater sources that pick up calcium and magnesium as they move through soil and rock. Why Central Valley Water Is So Hard on Heaters

When water is heated, those minerals fall out of solution and settle as scale. Over years of daily use, that scale accumulates inside the tank, on the heating element or burner surface, and along the dip tube. The result is a heater that has to work harder to deliver the same shower.
What Scale Actually Does Inside the Tank
In a gas water heater, sediment collects on the bottom of the tank, directly above the burner. It acts like an insulating blanket, forcing the burner to run longer to transfer heat through the crust. You may hear popping or rumbling sounds as trapped water flashes to steam beneath the layer of minerals. That noise is not cosmetic—it stresses the glass lining and accelerates corrosion.
Electric units suffer differently. Scale coats the lower heating element, causing it to overheat and burn out. Replacement elements are inexpensive, but repeat failures often signal that the tank itself is nearing the end of its service life.
The Real-World Cost: Shorter Lifespan, Higher Bills
Manufacturers typically rate storage-tank water heaters for 8 to 12 years. The anode rod is a sacrificial metal component that corrodes in place of the tank walls; once it is spent, rust takes over quickly.

Maintenance That Actually Extends Life
The single most useful task is an annual flush. Draining a few gallons through the bottom valve clears loose sediment before it hardens into a crust.
